Sturgis Trip - Our longest road trip, and our first trip to
the Black Hills of SD - one of the eight mission trips Crossroads Church sponsored in 2008 was a biker-focused trip to the world's largest motorcycle rally - in Sturgis, SD (August 1-11, 2008). We had seven people register to go on this trip
in 2008, but a few dropped out for personal reasons, but four of us made the trip (here's the
2008 pictures).
Our main ministry was assisting the Dakota Baptist Convention with their tent on Main Street (two tents east of Junction Ave.) during the rally. We shared testimonies with anyone that would take three minutes to listen. Those that listened were eligible to register for a drawing for a Harley-Davidson 105th Anniversary Edition Softail Deluxe motorcycle (number 1220 out of 2500). This bike is valued at $19,370.! The drawing was held at 1:00 pm on 8/9, and the motorcycle was won by Aaron Scott, of Billings, MT.
Over 5,000 people stopped in the tent to hear a Christian testimony, and God used that to bring 1,337 people to a saving knowledge of Christ. (if you like that idea, check out this link to Three Minute Story).
We always try to support
efforts of the Christian Motorcyclists Assoc. (CMA) when we can - locally and
nationally. At Sturgis, CMA has 11 ministry locations, and has over 350
"slots" to fill for those service opportunities. Our group of
four in 2008
worked 5 of their 11 ministry locations - namely the two Photo towers, the All Harley Drag races, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, and the CMA information booth in Mr. AL's. Our group also had time to wash bikes with the Sturgis Wesleyan Church, at the "Free Bike Wash", and give out water at "Jacob's Well", a ministry of First Baptist Sturgis.
We stayed at Westside Baptist Church in Rapid City, and enjoyed the hospitality (and worship service) with Bob Hower and Fred McDonald. In addition to daily morning devotionals at Westside, we went to two worship services at Mission of the Cross, and two with CMA.

2009
Sturgis Trip - The church leadership thought the
2008 trip was
so successful, we thought we'd go again, (July 30-Aug. 11, 2009), so year 2/Trip
2 was underway. This time, 8 bikers registered (4 from Crossroads and 4
from CMA Newnan), and 7 made the
trip on 6 motorcycles, but leaving on 3
different days and returning in 4 different groups.
Our group of 7
worked the DBC (sturgisbikegiveaway) tent 27 shifts, where a new, 2009 H-D FLSTB
Softail Cross Bones was given to
David Kirchoff, of Gillette, Wyoming. Our team also worked 28 shifts with
CMA (at 7 of those previously mentioned 11 service opportunity locations),
and worked 3 1/2 shifts serving at the Wesleyan Church with freebikewash.
We stayed at Westside Baptist Church in Rapid City again (with Garvon Golden and
Bob Hower).

2010
Sturgis Trip - Our third year of promoting this trip,
happened to be the 70th anniversary of the Sturgis rally. Four people
signed up, but only one ended up making the trip to Sturgis. The trip was
Aug. 5-15, 2010. We again served with the Dakota Baptist bike giveaway tent (in
Rapid City and in Sturgis), 2 shifts with free bike wash at Wesleyan Church, and
worked 5 shifts with CMA at 4 service locations. Kristi Janssen from
Vashon, WA won the 2010 H-D Dyna Wide Glide this year (and the gospel was
presented 7317 times, with 1147 making decisions for Christ). Lodging in
2010 was again with Bob Hower, but at Foothills Comm. Baptist Church in
Piedmont, SD.

2011
Trip - Daytona Beach - After three years of
serving in Sturgis, the FL Baptist Convention will duplicate the Sturgis model
of witnessing and
bike giveaway for the Daytona Bike Week, and we will help them
in 2011. The rally dates are Fri. Mar. 4 - Sun. Mar. 13, and our mission trip and
ride is planned for Sat. Mar. 5 - Sat. Mar. 12. Trip cost is expected to
be $125 plus fuel expenses. Sign up deadline is Jan. 23, 2011. The
last
testimony training was Feb. 6, 12:45 at the
Hwy. 16
conference room.
